If you’re here, you’re probably wondering about the ethics of AI. You may be confident that we need the ethical development and use of AI, but less certain of what it actually means in practice. Isn’t “ethics” too soft to steer the course of AI? Isn’t AI just a tech hype? And, if not, isn’t it already too late to make it much safer? How can it be that the same people urging for more safeguards to AI are the ones racing to push the frontier of AI to market?

Whether you stumbled onto my website by accident, followed a link from a recent talk or article, or were looking for insights into the fascinating—but also messy—space of AI and ethics: welcome! Join me in exploring those questions as we search for answers. You may be surprised to discover a way to navigate all of this.

I’m Alex. I work at Google in Responsible AI. This is my work and passion, which has always been at intersections: combining economics and philosophy as well as practice and theory.

I’ll be sharing insights and frameworks that will help professionals, decision-makers, and concerned citizens make smarter decisions about AI use, development, and governance. I’m writing specifically for AI ethics skeptics who don’t assume AI developers and companies are evil or government agencies are angels; who aren’t convinced we’ll get to the promises of AI nor that we’ll arrive at the peril.

If this is you, subscribe to my brief—and you’ll get my latest ideas, thoughts, and frameworks delivered straight to your inbox.

Just a quick note: Everything I share here is my own personal opinion and doesn't necessarily represent the views of my employer, Google.
